William Montague Browne

William Montague Browne (7 July 1827 - 28 April 1883) was born in Dublin, Ireland and served in the British Army during the Crimean War. He later emigrated to the southern United States.
During the War Between the States, Browne served as Acting Confederate Secretary of State and as aide-de-camp to President Jefferson Davis. He was promoted to Brigader General in November, 1864. After the war he was an attorney and was a professor of History and Constitutional Law at the University of Georgia. He died in Athens, Georgia.
