1861: Kentucky declares its neutrality in the War Between The States.
1861: A State Convention meeting in Raleigh dissolves North Carolina’s association with the United States. That same day the Convention established a committee to investigate the design for an official state flag with Colonel John D. Whitford as chairman.
1862: Abraham Lincoln signs the Homestead Act, giving citizens 21 years or older the right to buy 160 acres of land in the West.
1864: The Battle of Ware Bottom Church begins in Virginia between troops are led by U.S. General Benjamin Butler and troops led by C.S. General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard. The Confederates are victorious, surrounding Butler's forces.
1868: The Republican Convention nominates Ulysses S. Grant to run for President of the United States and Schuyler Colfax as Vice-President.
