1824: C.S. General Edmund Kirby Smith is born in Saint Augustine, Florida.

1860: The Republican Convention is held in Chicago, Illinois. William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, and Abraham Lincoln of Illinois are the leading contenders from a field of six candidates. Lincoln wins on the third ballot. Hannibal Hamlin of Maine, an outspoken, long-time Abolitionist, is chosen for Vice-President.

1861: The Confederate States Government offers war volunteers a $10 premium.

1863: The Battle of Champian Hill begins in Mississippi.

1868: The U.S. Senate votes 35 "guilty" and 19 "not guilty" in the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson. It is one vote shy of the necessary two-thirds majority.
