1860: Senator John Crittenden of Kentucky proposes the Crittenden Compromise, which allows new States south of the old Missouri Compromise line to determine for themselves whether they will enter the Union slave or free.

1865: The Thirteenth Amendment, abolishing slavery throughout the United States, becomes part of the Constitution.
