1865: General Robert Edward Lee surrenders the Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. In a letter to his troops, Lee writes, "After four years of arduous service, marked by unsurpassed courage and fortitude, the Army of Northern Virginia has been compelled to yield to overwhelming numbers."
