1864: The Battle of Poison Creek occurs in Arkansas.
1865: Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrenders to General William Tecumseh Sherman near Durham in North Carolina, effectively ending the War Between the States.
2006: Southern historian Grady McWhiney dies at his home in Abilene, Texas.
