1861: Colonel Robert Edward Lee is offered command of the United States Army, but declines the position. Troops begin to arrive in Washington, D.C. and Federal forces withdraw from Harper's Ferry, Virginia.

1864: The Battle of Poison Creek occurs in Arkansas.

1865: Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston surrenders to General William Tecumseh Sherman near Durham in North Carolina, effectively ending the War Between the States.

2006: Southern historian Grady McWhiney dies at his home in Abilene, Texas.
