1861: Abraham Lincoln issues a proclamation calling for 75,000 troops to "put down the rebellion" in the Southern States and to reconvene Congress and the Senate to determine any additional measures to be taken. In this proclamation, Lincoln states that the forces called out would have, as their first order, the duty of repossessing federal facilities (including several dozen forts, arsenals, navy yards, ships, and other facilities) that had been seized by the Confederate States.
1861: Robert Edward Lee, son of a Revolutionary War hero, and a 25 year distinguished veteran of the United States Army and former Superintendent of West Point, is offered command of the Union Army. Lee declines.
1865: Abraham Lincoln dies at 7:22 in the morning from a gunshot to the head. Vice-President Andrew Johnson assumes the presidency.
