Samuel Rush Watkins (June 26, 1839 – July 20, 1901) was an infantryman in the First Tennessee Infantry, Company H (the “Maury Greys”). He served the entire length of the war.
His book, Company Aytch: Or, a Side Show of the Big Show is regarded as one of the best military memoirs of all time, ranking with those of Thucydides, Julius Caesar, and Ulysses S. Grant, and in common with this company, also ranks as a classic in world literature. It is also the best of its genre in portraying war from the grunts' point of view.
