Mary J. Green

Mary J. Green (2 November 1827 - 2 January 1924) was born in Georgetown, South Carolina. In 1864, while forced to flee her home during the Battle of Resaca, she tendered her service to the Confederate wounded at the Ocmulgee Hospital in Macon, Georgia. After the war she interred the Confederate dead left on the Resaca battlefield and established the Resaca Confederate Cemetery. The State of Georgia asked her to undertake the removal and re-burial of the Confederate dead from the Chickamauga battlefield also. In 1895 she joined the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mary Green is buried with her parents in Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta, Georgia.
