To my fellow Southron Compatriots, do you praise Abe Lincoln? Do you express shame for the secession of the Southern States? Do you brag about the gallant and noble cause of Yankee invaders? Of course not! Then why do so many repeat the "Yankee lie" about Kentucky? On most "Southern" websites and many "Southern" books, the "Yankee lie" is repeated over and over again. Most of them, if they say anything at all about Kentucky and secession, say that "Kentucky never officially seceded." That simply is not true.
Kentucky had declared itself a neutral State; however, if neutrality was broken, the State pledged to become part of the Confederacy. When Lincoln requested 75,000 men to serve in the Union army, Kentucky Governor Beriah Magoffin, a Southern sympathizer, refused to comply and stated that Kentucky would "...furnish no troops for the wicked purpose of subduing her sister Southern states."
As a matter of fact, the people of western Kentucky (along with western Tennessee) were very impatient about secession. Representatives from the counties in the Jackson Purchase region of western Kentucky and Tennessee met in my hometown of Mayfield, Kentucky to discuss the creation of a new State of "Jackson," to be formed from portions of Tennessee and Kentucky. This plan was scrapped after Tennessee seceded.
The people of Kentucky had to go to more trouble to secede than any other State in Dixie! The legislature of Kentucky turned coward and went back on their promise to the people, voting against secession. The people, outraged at their turncoat "representatives," wouldn't let that stand.
The Kentuckians decided that since their legislature violated their solemn promise to secede, they were left no option but to follow the course of their colonial forefathers, when they seceded from England. They held a convention of the people. Kentucky's Secession Convention was held in November 1861 at Russellville, Kentucky. Presiding over this convention was Henry C. Burnett, a U.S. Senator from the western district. Burnett with a total of one hundred sixteen representatives from 68 of the 100 counties in the State (that's over 2/3) (the remaining 32 counties were represented by letters, or "proxies" expressing a desire to secede) unanimously voted for secession. When you add in the "proxy" votes from the letters of the other 32 counties, that's 100%! They went on to elect George W. Johnson as the provisional Confederate Governor, and to establish Bowling Green as the State capitol. When Governor Johnson was killed in the Battle of Shiloh, Richard Hawes was named as his replacement.
Henry C. Burnett went on to become one of Kentucky's representatives to the Confederate Congress. These were not self-appointed nobodies; they were representatives, leaders from the various counties and communities from across the State. That's a far cry from the "official myth," that Kentucky was split on the issue. Of course there were certain individuals that opposed secession, as there were in every Southern State. But, the "lion's share" of Kentucky firmly favoured and supported the Confederacy, and her noble cause.
The "official myth" says that most of Kentucky leaned toward the "Union" -- an absolute lie! The "official myth" says Kentucky didn't "officially" secede -- another lie! Now friend, IF Kentucky's secession wasn't "official," neither was the Declaration of Independence, for you see, that wasn't passed through the normal channels of the "established government" either. Besides, according to the worshippers of Lincoln, none of the States legitimately seceded -- which any serious student of history knows is a lie. The "official history," since the time of "Dis-honest Abe," has been a series of "official lies" -- just as it remains today, with the "politically correct" headlines, which will become tomorrow's "history."
Please, do not act as a mouthpiece for the "yankee lie" and correct any misrepresentation that you might have published anywhere. The truth has always been an enemy of the Empire and an ally of Dixie! Let's put it out there and quit aiding the enemy, by repeating their lies, and advancing their cause.
