John Caldwell Calhoun (18 March 1782 – 31 March 1850) was born in Abbeville, South Carolina.

After serving a brief period in the South Carolina legislature, Calhoun was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1810. He then served as Secretary of War under James Monroe from 1817 to 1825; as Vice-President under John Quincy Adams and then Andrew Jackson from 1825 to 1832; as Senator from South Carolina from 1832 to 1844; as Secretary of State under John Tyler from 1844 to 1845; and again in the Senate from 1845 until his death in 1850.
