John Brown Gordon

John Brown Gordon (6 February 1832 - 9 January 1904) was born in Upson City, Georgia. Though a lawyer by trade with no military training before the War Between the States, Gordon was commissioned a Captain of the 6th Alabama Infantry Regiment in early May of 1861 and rose to the rank of Colonel by 28 April 1862. Colonel Gordon was promoted to the rank of Brigadier-General on 1 November 1862. He was then put in charge of General Jubal Early's Division in the Army of Northern Virginia from 11 April 1863 to 8 May 1864. On 14 May 1864 General Gordon was promoted to Major-General and was given the command of Johnson's Division in the Army of Northern Virginia. General Gordon fought at the Battle of First Manassas.
