Grady McWhiney

Grady McWhiney (15 July 1928 – 18 April 2006) wrote hundreds of articles and books focusing on Southern culture and War for Southern Independence. His work included Cracker Culture: Celtic Ways in the Old South, in which he wrote that influences from Scottish, Irish and Welsh ancestors differentiated Southerners from other Americans, molded their culture and guided the region's history. McWhiney died 18 April 2006 at his home in Abilene, Texas.
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, he served in the Marine Corps at the end of World War II and married Sue Baca in 1947. After his military service, he returned to Louisiana, where he attended Centenary College and earned a master's degree at Louisiana State Univerwity. He later earned a doctorate from Columbia University.
His 44-year academic career included posts at Northwestern University, the University of Alabama and Texas Christian University.
