Confederate Pictures Reenactment Films

This site is dedicated to the memory of my father, George Alton WIlls - August 3, 1935 - August 21, 2008, my mentor, my financial backer, my number one camera-man and my friend...
For the gallant and manly way you fought the most hellish cancer ever conceived by man, among many other things, I am eternally proud to be called your son. I love you, dad.
Confederate Pictures Reenactment Films is owned by George Roland Wills. George, a pencil portrait artist, who began the GALLERY513 School of Art & Portraiture in 1998, became interested in the Civil War several years ago. This portrait of General Robert E. Lee was his first Civil War drawing.
The company was originally formed to make historical videos free of charge, as a company called FULL ECLIPSE PRODUCTIONS. It was created in order to produce official documentaries of historical places which otherwise would have no video documentation, such as the official documentary of Booker T. Washington National Monument (2004) and the official documentary of historic Avenel House in Bedford, Virginia, called PORTRAIT OF A PLANTATION - A DOCUMENTARY OF THE AVENEL HOUSE (2003). The production company name was changed from FULL ECLIPSE PRODUCTIONS to CONFEDERATE PICTURES in 2005, at the Appomattox 140th event. These videos, and others made for the National Park Service, are also marketed under the imprint of FREEDOM FILMS, which is owned by CONFEDERATE PICTURES.
The company's turn towards reenacting as an art form was established in 2005 - in order to preserve the efforts of battlefield reenactors and living historians whose efforts would otherwise disappear over time. Its primary goal is to follow what reenactors themselves like to say of their hobby; they are there to educate and entertain the public, and to have a good time in a family-oriented atmosphere. These films are made in that spirit of reenacting brotherhood, and cameraderie. Essentially a not-for-profit enterprise, CONFEDERATE PICTURES strives for the preservation and remembrance of these reenactors efforts, and not just the event, itself. Too often the event itself eclipses those who attend it, and the importance of those who make the events possible is discounted in the promotion of the event.
In these videos, reenactors are encouraged to play-act before, and during, the battles - and to set up their own impromptu scenarios which can then be edited into the actual staged battles they fight as a group. Most - if not all - of this playacting occurs before the official battles begin, and sometimes is even scripted. The idea of a "Living Scrapbook" for the reenactors is the main thrust of these efforts.
The performances in CONFEDERATE PICTURES documentaries, motion pictures, and in the reenactment videos, are strictly on a volunteer basis, using unpaid actors and actresses, as well as reenactors. The filming locations, such as the historical homes and other locations, are also offered free of charge to CONFEDERATE PICTURES in exchange for the historical coverage and the filming efforts of the groups who volunteer their time to make these films. George got the idea for this type of volunteer structuring from his years of being involved in amateur and semi-professional acting groups such as The Daytona Beach Playhouse (in Daytona Beach, Florida), SHOWTIMERS, The Little Town Players, The Liberty Players, The Virginia Western Community College Brown Library Theatre, and other groups. Many of the actors who audition do so through their own organizations and stage troupes. Casting calls and auditions have been held at several playhouses who have brought in the necessary talent for the films' more involved (and memorized) speaking parts. Acting and Reenacting thus merge nicely, with one group providing period authenticity and believability, and the other providing acting instruction in the stances, delivery, method, and acting techniques necessary to be understood while performing.
The reenactment videos, as an art form, came about while George was filming reenactment battlefield footages for use in his documentaries and motion pictures, such as THE GREAT SACRIFICE OF PRESIDENT JEFFERSON DAVIS. These battle scenes were originally secondary to the purpose of the documentaries and motion pictures, but the reenactors, themselves, saw things differently. They agreed to allow George to 'dress out' and 'follow their exploits on the field' if he would release the scenes of these events, separately, as films unto themselves. There was clearly a need for such filming, according to the reenactors, because many Civil War battlefield organizations do not make such films of their events nor offer any such service to their repeat field performers. Some films are occasionally made of these events, and offered for sale in the various battlefield giftshops... however, the majority of these films that are made, were, according to the reenactors, either edited down to a few select scenes, and then silenced with overdubs of music, or else used in a film somewhere which did not showcase the reenactors themselves as participants. The reenactors wanted more of themselves in the scenes, and less of an 'army generic' appearance in the 'official videos' which were made.
George agreed to help these reenactors with their plight, and in exchange for unprecedented and virtually unrestricted access to their activities, the creation of the CONFEDERATE PICTURES REENACTMENT VIDEOS was begun. To date nearly fifty such films have been released. The films include battlefield scenes, as well as the scheduled demonstrations given at the events, and also behind-the scenes interviews with the various groups who participate. Both Union and Confederate reenactors are showcased in these films, and there is no preference shown to any one side, or cause, as both sides strive to benefit actual history in their portrayals. Indeed, most Civil War reenacting groups, North or South, Eastern Theatre or Western Theatre, United States, Canadian-based, or British... European, Austrailian, or other... actually perform a dual role, called GALVANIZING, in the which they play either side , or in some cases, both sides, of the conflict at the same time.
These reenactment films are strictly educational in nature, and do not delve into the political nature of the conflict beyond what is called for in the scripts and sequences. Thus, the reenacting films have no political statements to make and any such viewpoints are done 'in character', at the time, for the benefit of history. In the future, CONFEDERATE PICTURES does intend to study the social, economic and political reasons behind the Contest (as Lee referred to the war), and will release a planned multiple DVD series entitled THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CONFEDERACY, in the which the South, and indeed all of American history, from the time of the American Revolution, will be held up to the light and studied as an absolute value. In this series of videos, the works of Greg Loren Durand (http://www.confederatereprint.com), (http://www.americascaesar.com), Frank Conner, Thomas J. DiLorenzo, Walter Brian Cisco, Dr. David Aiken, Gary C. Walker, HW Johnstone, and Ronald and Donald Kennedy will be studied and compared to the works of other Civil War historians, such as James M. McPherson, William C. Davis, Eric Foner, Garry Wills (no known relation, sort of like that David Wills fellow and his museum house in Gettysburg; that friend of Lincoln. We don't claim either of them as being from our line. ), and others.
The filming and releasing of the reenactment videos of CONFEDERATE PICTURES was thus the idea of the reenactors in the field, and was begun originally at the request of these reenactors who wanted to see what they 'had done' on the field that day. As reenactors, these people are usually too busy doing what they do to actually get to 'watch' what is going on all around them. In these videos, they get to watch themselves later, and see exactly what sort of impact their portrayal is having on their intended audiences. They also get to finally 'enjoy' their work, in a spectator capacity, and to fine-tune certain aspects of their characters. And soon enough, the individuals at these events will also become 'history', as reenactors come and go in the hobby. Each event, then, is showcased in its own right, and is important to those who were there - at the specific event - and not just at the original battle.
Thus, at long last, the Reenactor, as an art form - as a learned portrayer of actual history, and as an invaluable member of United States history, both Union and Confederate, is finally appreciated in an appropriate light. Whether Cavalry, Artillery, Infantry, Signal Corps, Civilian Impression, Sutlers, or Living Historians (Jefferson Davis, Lee, Grant, etc.)... the efforts of these people are finally detailed and fully documented.
George has filmed for his reenactor friends at many important reenactments in the past several years. Chief among these are the 140th Appomattox, where he was the sanctioned videographer,(www.140thappomattox.com), the 145th First Manassas at Cedar Creek (July 2006), the 145th Shiloh event in Michie, Tennessee at the National Military Park, the Official 145th Battle of Antietam, hosted by Bill Raymond, in Loudon Heights, Virginia, and many others.
Confederate Pictures has created a "wish list" of future films they would like to produce, (all of which are still in the planning stages, at this time) and is ready to announce these films as possible future projects. Chief among these films is "STONEWALL The Motion Picture", a film about General Thomas Jonathan Jackson from the time he leaves VMI until his tragic end at Chancellorsville and the 14 or so Union generals he profoundly confounds. These Union generals will be showcased, and will be speaking roles, with direct quotes when and where they can be used.
THEY SPEAK OF HIS ECCENTRICITIES... HIS AWKWARDNESS... HIS SHY, ODD WAYS... AND MANY... SINGULARITIES.
LET THESE BE... GRANTED.
THERE IS... BENEATH ALL THIS... IN THE SOUL OF THE MAN... A GRANDEUR... AND NOBILITY. A CHILD-LIKE PURITY, AND GRACIOUS SWEETNESS...
MINGLED... WITH THE INDOMINABLE WILL... WHICH MAKE HIM.... WHAT I CALL HIM.
A REAL HERO.
The story is told from the viewpoint of one of General Stuart's subordinates, and future Jackson biographer, Captain John Esten Cooke, through his quotes and narratives. The part of Jackson has not been cast yet, nor has the 'main character' of Cooke, and interested parties are asked to inquire about working on the project, set for a tentative 2009 release date. Confederate Pictures will also need to cast an authentic period 'foot cavalry', with extremely active Confederate soldiers capable of running repeatedly over short distances of fields at a quick pace, sometimes barefoot, as well as the 14 living historian impressions of these Union generals and a great number of Union soldiers to appear in the film... A good number of these scenes would be desirable to obtain for the film. This film is slated to be a "war movie", and will strive to show the tactics and problems Jackson overcame in his career, battle for battle. The main character is actually slated to be Cooke, himself, and Jackson will be seen through his eyes, and their interaction, using the biography as source material. There are several parts which are already pre-cast, one in particular is that of General Robert E. Lee (Dave Palmer). ( In fact, a future film - as yet untitled - {possibly as - Lee - The Legend of Robert Edward Lee} - will star Dave Palmer as Lee in a similar film about Lee's life... thus Confederate Pictures can then shoot segments of both films at the same time... ). Confederate Pictures is extremely dedicated to being loyal to its living historians, and those who have worked with the organization in the past, and those who are still 'on board' with the company, enjoy the right of first refusal for the name roles in these films.
George has also just completed the second edition release of The Great Sacrifice of President Jefferson Davis (2007 Confederate Pictures Release). This film, the first in history about Jefferson Davis, stars Jim Bazo as Davis, and Dave Palmer as General Robert E. Lee. Tony Daniels stars as General Ulysses S. Grant. Jim and Dave are the sanctioned Davis and Lee at the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia, and Jim is also the sanctioned Davis at Beauvoir in Biloxi, Mississippi, and at the capitol in Montgomery, Alabama. This movie was filmed at the Confederate White House, St. Paul's Episcopal in Richmond (in Davis' actual pew), and Hollywood Cemetery by his five year old son's actual grave, as well as in the US and Canada, at Niagara Falls and Country Heritage Park In Toronto.

First Manassas at Cedar Creek - A Two-Disc Two Hour Movie about the 2006 Event, and the most popular reenactor movie to date. On-field scenes of the event, with all the myriad period uniforms, (Whole columns of Revolutionary War era- dressed Colonials waving Confederate Flags, and not a single St. Andrews 'Southern Cross' Battle Flag - anywhere - to be seen! Exactly as it was at Manassas Junction in 1861! An estimated 12,000 to 14,000 reenactors in attendance! This video continues to be a best seller. $30.00 postage paid.
THE RAINMAKER: The Revolving Battery Gun created by Dr. Gatlin, and owned by Benjamin the Beast Butler, one of twelve he ordered. Louis Wroblewski takes us on a complete walk-around of the piece, including the history of the gun, and how it operates, and then lets us fire it. I am personally turning the crank on this piece, and it is an awesome weapon, beautifully restored, and completely functional! The (One Hundred and Forty) Second Cedar Creek video has this segment in it. We go down the barrels and into the firing chambers in Nightshot, and show the ingenious workings of the weapon. The gun is fired several times in the video clip. $30.00 Postage Paid. 2 hour video.
George has also filmed five events to date at Cedar Creek, several of these on the battlefield, as a guest of various groups who were participating in the battles. "VICTORY AT CEDAR CREEK" (October 2005) - (An event in the which CONFEDERATE PICTURES is entrenched with the Confederates, on the field and in uniform, and getting some fantastic angles of the fighting, and the Confederate reenactors hold the hill after 141 years of trying! - a trick, okay, but Billy fell for it!) includes the pre-Dawn Tactical in awesome color slow shutter), "FIRST MANASSAS AT CEDAR CREEK" (145th Event July 2006), the 142nd Cedar Creek event (where they fire Benjamin the Beast Butler's actual revolving battery gun - known as a 'Gatlin Gun' after 1873) - the film is called "(The One Hundred and Forty) SECOND CEDAR CREEK" (October 2006) and is told from the UNION side of the fight, "DOWN THE VALLEY" ( 145th Winchester event - June 2007), and the 143rd "SHERIDAN'S RAID ON MIDDLETOWN" (October 2007). (All these films are two hour double disc collections, and are $30.00 postage paid - except for DOWN THE VALLEY and SHERIDAN'S RAID ON MIDDLETOWN, which are single discs, and are each $25.00 postage paid)
The Pre-Dawn Tactical at Cedar Creek Battlefield - October 2005 (from VICTORY AT CEDAR CREEK OCTOBER 2005). Note: The best scenes of this October 2005 night tactical are also found on the October 2006 Highlights from (one hundred and forty) Second Cedar Creek video as well...
Two original battlefields which can still be fought upon by period reenactors... Union Forces near the Heater House at Cedar Creek Battlefield, near Middletown, Virginia, and the VMI cadets take the field at New Market, Virginia
George has also filmed at the New Market reenactments as a guest of several reenactment groups, producing the films OLD FRIENDS AT NEW MARKET (May 2006) ($25.00 postage paid) and also the film THE BATTLE OF NEW MARKET, VIRGINIA 2006-2007, a combination of the battle footages filmed on the field with the Confederate reenactors behind the Bushong House, in the orchard, and on the field when the cadets rush the yankee lines on the field where it actually happened. ($30.00 postage paid).
The Annual November event known as Locust Grove, in Walkertown, and hosted by the Peninsula Artillery. A very nice event the first week in November, and held on an actual 1600's plantation, the Walker House on the Locust Grove Farm. (804) 769-8201 or (804) 744-6224 for information.
In honor of their 5th Annual event, the first one Confederate Pictures filmed for them, two cover art photos were released; one of the Peninsula Artillery and one of the 4th Virginia Cavalry Company D., who provide some nice interview footage in the film... Dave Palmer as General Robert E. Lee, mounted on Traveler, with his cavalry, always adds that touch of realism which makes the event a nice outing for everyone.
The 2007 LOCUST GROVE 6th Annual Event in Walkerton, Virginia. Some nice playacting and work by the reenactors. A small event, but attended by some fine people who enjoy this event each year. Dave Palmer as General Lee riding Traveller! (the sanctioned Lee at the MOC in Richmond, Virginia.). Hosted by the Peninsula Artillery, a great bunch of guys who are always ready to answer the call!. HISTORY OF LOCUST GROVE FARM
This beautiful scenic land, once roamed and known only by the Native Americans, came into possession of Major Thomas Walker through a patent granted by the King of England on February 26, 1665. Still owned by the Walker family, they have been able to pass this land on from generation to generation for over 300 years. Sitting high on the Mattaponi River, one can see and sense the beauty and history of this land. Many of the Walkers can tell you that some of their ancestors have never left this place and still wander through the old white brick home. Peaceful, tranquil and serene are the words that best describe Locust Grove. After spending an afternoon walking around the many fields, exploring the hardwood forests, or just sitting along the river bank, we think you will wholeheartedly agree.
Dave Palmer also attends the annual “Civil War Weekend” in Buchanan, Virginia. Living history with camps and demonstrations. Civil War movies, fashion show, church services. Friday evening skirmish, downtown street battle Saturday afternoon, Battle of Buchanan Sunday afternoon. All free. 540-254-1212 or http:// www.townofbuchanan.com. Next year, in 2009, Confederate Pictures plans to attend this event.

- The Storms of September Antietam Video - $25.00 Postage Paid
George has filmed at both of the 145th Antietam events, one during the SEPTEMBER STORM event, called "THE STORMS OF SEPTEMBER" - a film in which members of the Union army (The National Regiment) invited George to document their involvement ...
... as well as the official 145th reenactment in Loudon Heights as a guest of Bill Raymond on his gorgeous (and massive) farm. This film was a non-spectator event and the film is shot in 360 degree angles, which are as real as it gets. This film is THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM - THE 145TH ANNIVERSARY LOUDON HEIGHTS, VIRGINIA. ($25.00 Postage Paid). Bill Raymond built a replica of Antietam on his property for the event and shots of Burnside's actual Bridge also appear in the film. This is the official video for this event, and George was the sanctioned videographer. Bill Raymond puts on one of the best events one can imagine; his events are well worth the effort to attend. He and Corporal John Perry are pictured below at "2nd Cedar Creek" in October of 2006. That's his fence line on his property, during his 145th Antietam event... and that's Bill on a cavalry raid at the 6th Annual Locust Grove event in Walkerton in 2007...
His most recent event was The Official 145th Battle Reenactment of the Battle of Chancellorsville. " The Beginning of the 1863 Campaign " August 29th-31st, 2008 - http://www.emmitsburg.net/chancellorsville_2008/index.htm
And here's Bill at the recent 144th New Market event with his cavalry in combat.
