Charles Sumner (6 January 1811 – 11 March 1874) was a Radical Republican Senator from Massachusetts. He was beaten close to death on the Senate floor by Preston Brooks of South Carolina after he made disparaging comments regarding the latter's uncle, Senator Andrew Butler.
