The battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia, nicknamed "The Southern Cross," was designed by South Carolina Representative William Porcher Miles and modified by Confederate General Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard from its original rectangular dimensions to square. In its rectangular form, it was used as the Confederate Navy Jack. It is often erroneously referred to today as the "Stars and Bars" -- the nickname given to the First National flag of the Confederate States of America.
